Yr Wylan Gefnddu / The Black-backed Gull
Alaw/Melody - Tradd./Trad.
Geiriau/Words - Tradd./Trad.

Fel roeddwn ar foreuddydd yn rhodio gyda'r wawr
cyfarfum wylan gefnddu, ymgomiais a hi awr
gan ofyn newydd iddi o bob rhyw gwr o'r fro
rhwng ynys Enlli a´r Werddon lle buasai hi'n rhoi tro

O gwna dy ran am Eil o Man a sbia bob rhyw gafn.
A oes 'na sgota yn Dyglas neu ynta'n Darbi Hafn?

oddi yno i fae Llandrillo ar chwarter gynta'r trai
mi welwn yno benwaig yn fesul cant neu ddau
a´r newydd a anfonais i´r gŵr a´r awen ffraeth
mae´n siwr y cai fy nghyflog a´r penwaig ar y traeth

wel swydd yr heb bysgotwr yw trwsio'r rhwydau'r ha',
os gwnaiff hi stormydd lawer bydd sein pysgota da,
mi ddaw cyn daw y gaea os Duw rydd dywydd teg
mi gawn ni benwaig ddigon i dalu'r hen ddyléd

os gofyn neb yn unlle pwy luniodd gan fel hyn
hen ŵr sydd dros ei drigain yn dechrau troi yn wyn
a´i enw'n ffel oedd H ac L drwy Fôn ac Arfon faith
os daw pysgota i Gymru fe delir am ei waith

O gwna dy rhan am Eil o Man a sbia bob rhyw gafn
wel does na'm sgota'n Dyglas na chwaith yn Darbi Hafn
na chwaith yn Aberdyfi na chwaith 'n y Bermo bêr
lle dalwyd plant mewn hen rhwyd gant heb synnwyr dan y sêr

As I was one morning strolling at dawn
I met a black-backed gull, I discoursed with her for an hour
asking her for news from every corner of the realm
between Bardsey island and Ireland where she would take a turn

Oh make your way for the Isle of Man and look in every hollow.
Is there any fishing in Douglas, or otherwise in Darby Haven?

from thence to Llandrillo bay on the first quarter of the tide
I saw there herring by the hundred or two
and the news I sent to the man with the witty muse
I’m sure to get my wages and the herring on the beach

well, the job of the old fisherman is to mend the nets in Summer
if there will be many storms, it’ll be sign of good fishing
it'll come before the Winter comes, if God grants fine weather
we’ll have enough herring to pay the old debt

if anyone asks anywhere who made a song like this -
and old man past his three score that’s starting to turn white
and his name, discreetly, is H and L through vast Anglesey and Carnarvonshire,
if fishing comes to Wales his work will be paid for

oh make your way to the Isle of Man and look in every hollow
well there’s no fishing in Douglas or neither in Darby Haven
nor in Aberdyfi, nor in pure Barmouth
where children were caught in an old hundred net without sense under the stars.
