Y Blotyn Du / The Black Spot
Alaw/Melody - Tradd./Trad.
Geiriau/Words - Tradd./Trad.

Gwrandewch ar stori greulon
fu gynt yng ngwlad y Saeson
gerllaw i bentre y bu’r tro
o fewn i Gornwol dirion

hen wr oedd yno’n tario
a'i blant oddeutu’n trigo
a'i fab hynaf yn ddiwad
a’i fwriad ar drafeilio

I’r môr fe fynnai fentro,
yn brentis gaeth ei rwymo
am dros saith mlynedd efo’r Prins
ni glywsai ffrins oddi wrtho

daeth tywydd drwg anniddan
daeth gwynt yn groes i’w amcan
a daeth y llong mewn cyflwr gwael
I’r lan yng Nghornwal hafan

I dŷ ei chwaer fe gerddai
fel diarth ddyn gofynai
a oes trafeiliwr i chi’n frawd?
a ydi’r cymrawd gartre?

Mae i mi frawd gobeithio
a'i fwriad ar drafeilio
ac ar ei fraich mae blotyn du,
nis gwn beth ddarfu iddo

fi yw’r trafeiliwr caled
a'r blotyn sydd i’w weled
pa sut mae hynt fy mam a nhad?
pa sut mae’r stad yn stryied?

mae’r stad yn difa digon
pob rhodd gai groeso calon
ac am eu bod yn mynd ar feth
mae ganddynt beth ddyledion

dywedodd yntau – ymroaf
I wneud bob brys a allaf
y bore fory codai’n llon
a’u holl ddyledion dalaf

I dŷ ei dad fe gerddai
fel diarth ddyn lletyai
gan roi ei gôd i wraig y tŷ
I gadw hyd y borau

y pâr sibrydai’n dawel
fe gawsom hyn mewn gafael
bydd digon gennym at ein tro
os gallwn fwrdro’n ddirgel

tra’r mab yn tawel huno
â’r gyllell gwnant ei fwrdro
a'i fam ei hun yn dal ´n ei phwyll
y gannwyll I’w lofruddio

ei chwaer ddaeth yno’n forau
a phob rhyw fath o foethau
i groesawu´i hannwyl frawd i’r wlad
am dano i’w thad gofynnai

pa frawd rwyt ti’n ymofyn?
ni bu yma neithiwr undyn
o do yn wir na wadwch ddim
dangosodd i mi’r blotyn

dechreuai’r hen ŵr dyngu
pa felltith a ddaeth inni?
os lladdais i fy mab fy hun
daf finnau i’r un terfyn

a'r fam, dywedodd hithe
os y fi fu’n dal y gole
fe gaiff y gyllell yr un wedd
wneud fy niwedd inne

pan welai’r ferch dair celain
nis gallai peidio llefain.
aeth mas o’i chof a felly bu

tan rhoed hi dan ddaearen

Listen to a cruel story
that happened in the land of the English
beside a village it did happen
within gentle Cornwall

and old man was there dwelling
and his children adjacent living
and his eldest son, without a doubt
had his intent on travelling

To sea he insisted on venturing,
as an apprentice he was bound
for over seven years on the ‘Prince’,
his friends didn’t hear from him

bad, miserable weather came,
a wind came against his expectation
and the ship came in a bad state
to shore in the haven of Cornwall

to his sister’s house he walked
as an unfamiliar man he asked
´´do you have a traveller for a brother?
is the countryman home?´´

´´I have a brother, I hope,
and his intent on travelling
and on his arms is a black spot,
I don’t know what became of him´´

´´I am the hardy traveller
and the spot is to be seen,
how are things going with my parents?
how is the estate fairing?´´

´´the estate is suffering enough,
every gift is heartily welcomed
and because they are heading for ruin
they have quite a bit of debt´´

he said - ´´I resolve
to make all haste as I can
tomorrow morning I’ll rise joyfully
and all their debts I’ll pay´´

to his father´s house he walked
as an unfamiliar man he was hosted
and gave his bag to the wife of the house
to keep until the morning

the pair whispered quietly -
´´we got this within reach,
we’ll have enough on our turn
if we can murder discreetly

whilst the son was peacefully sleeping
with the knife they murdered him
and his own mother holding in her patience
the candle to murder him

his sister came there early
with all kinds of delicacies
to welcome her dear brother to the country
to her father she asked for him

´´which brother are you asking about?
there was here last night no man´´
´´oh yes indeed, deny it not,
he showed me the spot.´´

the old man started swearing -
´´what a curse has come upon us?
if I’ve killed my own son
I’ll come to the same end´´

and the mother she said -
´´if I did hold the light
the knife can, in the same way
make my end´´

when the daughter saw three dead
she couldn’t but cry
she went out of her mind, and that’s how she was
until she was put under the earth.
