Y Gelynnen / The Holly
Alaw/Melody - Tradd./Trad.
Geiriau/Words - Tradd./Trad.

Un wyf fi a roes fy mryd
ar gael fy myd yn llawen,
un sy’n hoff o rodio´r wig
i blethu brig y gelynen

fy mwyn gyfeillion dewch ynghŷd
i gyd i ganmol y glasbren;
pren canmolus gweddus gwiw
a´i enw yw y gelynen

aderyn to a gafoydd dŷ
a cheiliog du´r fwyalchen
ac eistedd mae f´annwylyd wen
dan gysgod pren y gelynen

ynn a derw, helyg, drain
a chyda rhain y wernen,
cyll ac efyll, aethwydd, llwy;
fe garan hwy´r gelynen

eifi, bae a bocs ac yw
a nyth y dryw yn ei changen;
dyma´r cwmni glân i gyd
a gare´r glyd gelynen

gallai´r milwr mwya´i glod
fu´n cerdded gwaelod Llunden
yfed gwin yng nghanol gwrych
mewn neuadd wych y gelynen

gallai´r mab drwy synnwyr serch
fynd gyda’i ferch esgeirwen
a´i chusanu rif y myrdd
o dan y wyrdd gelynen

I am one that put my intent
on making my world joyful,
one who’s fond of strolling the wood
to weave a branch of the holly

My gentle friends come together
all to sing the praise of the green tree;
an admirable, worthy, fine tree
and her name is the holly

the sparrow was given a house
and the black cockerel of the blackbird,
and sitting is my pure darling
under the shadow of the holly tree

ash and oak, willow, thorn
and with these the alder,
hazel and apple tree, aspen, elm
they do love the holly

ivy, bay and box and yew
with the wren’s nest in her branch;
this is the pure company all
who love the sheltering holly

the most venerable soldier
who walks the bottom of London
can drink wine under the bush
in the brilliant hall of the holly

a lad through the sense of love
can go with his white-legged girl
and kiss her innumerable times
under the green holly
