WELSH FOLK SINGER
Y Dyrnwr Tân / The Steam Thresher
Alaw/Melody: ‘Y Bachgen Main’ - Tradd./Trad.
Geiriau/Lyrics: Dafydd Dafis, Penllech, Llŷn
O f’awen, rwy’n ymddeffro unwaith eto i geisio cân
ar rhyw destun ddigon anodd sef ar ddiwrnod y dyrnwr tân
o mor brysur fydd y diwrnod pan y bydd yn dechrau troi
a’r hen ffarmwr fydd yn gweiddi ‘come on boys’ yn ddiymdroi
‘dau ohonoch’ medd yn union ‘ewch i gario’r ŷd i lawr’
rheini’n cwyno yn anghyffredin bod y ‘sgubau’n od o fawr
rhaid cael dau neu dri o ddynion, lled rhyw gryfion at y gwellt
pan y bydd yn dechrau chwyrnu fydd fforcheidiau fel y mellt
ond bu’n agos im anghofio, rhaid cael un i gario’r us
fe wna llefnyn y gwaith yma, mae’n anodd iawn cael job ddim is
chi a wyddoch y gorchwyl nesa yw darlunio’r cinio neis
cig a thatws a phlwm pwdin a dipyn bach o bwdin reis
ar ol gorffen yr holl wledda, er nad ydyw hyn ond lol
do mi welais lawer llencyn ar ol bwyta’n rhwbio’i fol
wedi gorffen yr holl helynt, gwelir pawb yn mynd drachefn
tuag adre, yn flinedig, pawb a’i bicwarch ar ei gefn.
Oh my muse, I’m awakening once again to attempt a song
on a difficult enough topic, that is the steam threshing day
oh how busy the day will be, when it starts turning
and the old farmer will be shouting ‘come on boys’ without delay
‘two of you’ he says directly ‘go and carry the grain down’
themselves complaining greatly that the sheafs seem oddly large.
two or three fairly strong men are needed for the stalks
when it starts roaring, pitchforks will be like lightning
I almost forgot to mention, one is needed to carry the husks
a small lad will do for this, there isn’t a job that’s much lower.
you all know the next undertaking, that is to prepare the lovely meal -
meat and potatoes and plum pudding, and a little bit of rice pudding
after finishing all the feasting, though this be only banter,
yes I’ve seen many’s the lad rubbing his belly.
after all the commotion is ended, everyone is seen making their way
homewards, tired, everyone with their pitchforks on their shoulders.
